Routes people ask for in London

How long do you want to walk?

How much does a London walk cost?

The first story of every walk is free to listen to, and so is the written text of every story on the site. Paying unlocks the stories that have not been written yet on that particular walk — from £4.99 for a short one to £19.99 for a full day. Once anyone pays for a walk, its stories become free for everyone who comes after them.

Do I need mobile data while I walk?

Yes, for now. Audio streams as you go rather than downloading in advance, so you need a connection at each stop. Central London coverage is good enough that this is rarely a problem, but on a long walk through the parks it is worth checking you have signal before you set off. Offline download is not available yet.

What languages are the London walks in?

English and Russian, with one walk in Polish. A walk is written in one language and stays in it — the Russian walks are not translations of the English ones, they are different routes chosen by different people. Each walk in the list above is labelled with its language, so you can see before you open it.

Can I start in the middle of a walk?

Yes. Every stop is a separate story that stands on its own, and the player lets you jump to any of them. Walks are ordered as a route because that is the shortest way round, not because the stories depend on each other. If you are already standing next to stop seven, start at stop seven.

Who writes the stories?

A language model drafts them, from a route a person asked for, about places verified against Google Maps first. The narration is speech synthesis. We say so on every page rather than in the footer, and there is a longer explanation of exactly which step is machine-written at /about/how-stories-are-made. Corrections go to [email protected] and are read by a person.
