Step into the sun-drenched center of Piazza di Santa Maria in Trastevere and gaze up at the shimmering golden facade of the basilica. Beneath the Romanesque bell tower, a radiant thirteenth-century mosaic depicts the Virgin Mary enthroned and nursing the infant Jesus, flanked by ten holy maidens carrying oil lamps beneath the warm Mediterranean sky.
Tradition recounts that on this very ground in thirty-eight before Christ, a miraculous fountain of pure golden oil burst forth from the earth and flowed directly down to the Tiber river. Early Roman Christians interpreted this phenomenon as a divine portent heralding the birth of the Savior, prompting Saint Callixtus to establish the earliest house church on the site.
Inside the dim, hushed nave, twenty-two colossal ancient granite columns support the carved wooden ceiling. Each column was scavenged directly from the ancient Roman Baths of Caracalla and the nearby pagan temples of the river port, giving Roman antiquity a sacred second life.
Walk eastward along the narrow cobblestone curves of Via della Lungaretta toward the ancient riverside.
