Blue Mosque (Sultan Ahmed Camii)

The Sultan Ahmed Mosque in Istanbul is a famous 17th-century landmark featuring six minarets and over 20,000 handmade Iznik ceramic tiles. Commissioned in 1609 by 19-year-old Sultan Ahmet I and designed by architect Sedefkar Mehmet Aga, it was completed in 1617. To resolve a religious scandal caused by matching Mecca's six minarets, the sultan funded a seventh minaret for Mecca's Grand Mosque.

Why does the Sultan Ahmed Mosque in Istanbul have six minarets?

Look at what stands before you... six slender minarets rising like stone needles into the sky. This is the Sultanahmet Mosque, known to the world as the Blue Mosque... and it was born from ambition, controversy, and perhaps the most famous misunderstanding in Ottoman history.......... The year is sixteen oh nine. Sultan Ahmet the First is barely nineteen years old. He has won no great battles, claimed no enemy territories. So how does a young sultan prove himself worthy of the Ottoman throne? He decides to build the Grandest mosque Istanbul has ever seen... right here, on the ruins of the Great Palace of the Byzantine emperors, directly Opposite the Hagia Sofia, daring to challenge it.......... He chose architect Sedefkar Mehmet Aga, a student of the legendary Mimar Sinan, and gave him a command that would spark an empire-wide scandal. There is a famous legend that the sultan asked for Altin minarets... minarets made of Gold. But his architect heard altI minare... Six minarets. Gold and six... just one syllable apart in Turkish. And that tiny misunderstanding changed the skyline of Istanbul forever.......... The problem? Only the Grand Mosque in Mecca had six minarets. Religious scholars, the Ulema, were Outraged. They accused the young sultan of arrogance... some even forbade Muslims from praying here! Sultan Ahmet's solution was bold. He paid for a Seventh minaret to be added to the mosque in Mecca, ensuring the holiest site in Islam would always stand apart.......... Now step inside in your mind. Over twenty Thousand handmade Iznik tiles cover the walls... blue tulips, roses, cypresses... more than fifty different designs in shimmering blues and greens. The sultan was so obsessed with these tiles that in sixteen thirteen he issued an imperial decree Banning their sale to anyone else until his mosque was finished!......... And look up at those grand chandeliers. Can you spot the ostrich eggs nestled among them? They were placed there to repel spiders and prevent cobwebs... an old Ottoman trick passed down from Mimar Sinan himself.......... Sultan Ahmet never got to enjoy his masterpiece for long. He died of typhus in sixteen seventeen... at just twenty seven years old... the very same year the mosque was inaugurated. He is buried right here, in a mausoleum just outside these walls. The young sultan who never won a war... left behind something far more enduring than any battlefield victory.
