    Welcome to Noksapyeong Station... a place that was never supposed to be just a subway stop. As you step out of Exit Two, take a second to look back at the entrance. Because the station beneath your feet has one of the strangest origin stories in all of Seoul.

    The reason such a splendid station was built in this quiet neighborhood was because there was a plan to build the Seoul Metropolitan Government Building right here, near where Yongsan-gu Office now stands. After Cho Soon was elected Seoul's first popularly elected mayor, the city decided to move City Hall to this very site, near Noksapyeong Station, complete with a hundred-member citizen committee and a full construction blueprint. There were even plans to develop the underground space into a shopping complex, which is why the escalators inside look more like a department store than a subway.

    But then... the plan collapsed. The relocation was canceled, and the never-built Line Eleven — which was supposed to make this a major transfer hub — eventually bypassed the station entirely. What was left? A Magnificent station... with almost nobody in it. To this day, Noksapyeong has notably low ridership, but is celebrated for its impressive interior design.

    And that emptiness became its magic. It has five underground levels, a glass dome that floods the station with sunlight, and for years after opening, couples could even hold weddings there for free. Yes — Weddings! In a subway station! It's the Only subway station in all of South Korea with a glass dome ceiling.

    Now here's the part most people miss. The name Noksapyeong literally means "lush green field." The art motifs inside the station are inspired by this name — because the land above was actually covered with weeds and largely unpopulated until the end of the Joseon Kingdom in nineteen ten.

    Now look ahead. The street climbing uphill from here is Gyeongnidan-gil, and its name comes from the Republic of Korea Army Financial Management Corps that once operated nearby. That military nickname quickly overshadowed the official street name, symbolizing the area's shift from military adjacency to a symbol of urban cool. It stretches nine hundred thirty seven meters from the Corps' main gate all the way up to the Grand Hyatt Seoul.

    And what's just over the wall to your left? That's Yongsan Garrison — once the headquarters for U.S. military forces in South Korea, and before that, the Imperial Japanese Army's headquarters from nineteen ten to nineteen forty five. From Namsan mountain above, the base appears as a dash of green in an otherwise gray cityscape — a massive blank spot on city maps for over a century.

    So as you start walking uphill, know this: every cafe, every rooftop wine bar with views of Namsan Tower, every artisan bakery lining these alleys... all of it grew in the shadow of a grand plan that never happened and a military base that shaped the whole neighborhood's Dna.
