You stand upon Victory Bridge—Haghtanak Kamurj—the monumental seven-arch stone viaduct spanning the dramatic chasm of the Hrazdan River. Completed and officially opened in November 1945, this grand engineering triumph was designed by celebrated Armenian architects Artashes Mamadzhanyan and Ashot Asatryan alongside structural engineer Simon Ovnanyan. Built to celebrate the victory over fascism in the Second World War, it serves as the vital transportation gateway linking central Kentron with the western districts and Zvartnots International Airport.
The bridge spans two hundred meters in total length, soaring thirty-four meters above the rocky bed of the Hrazdan River. Constructed from heavy blocks of dark volcanic basalt quarried directly from the canyon walls, the structure features seven monumental semicircular arches supported by massive stone pylons anchored into the bedrock. Basalt parapets are adorned with sculpted bronze medallions, Soviet star emblems, and laurel wreaths symbolizing valor, sacrifice, and peacetime renewal.
Over half a million Armenian soldiers fought with exceptional bravery in the Second World War, with sixty-eight thousand making the ultimate sacrifice. Victory Bridge stands as a permanent civic monument to their courage. Look down from the center of the span: the rocky gorge floor unfolds below like a miniature landscape, where willow trees border the turbulent river and ancient footpaths wind along the canyon cliffs.
Walking across the wide pedestrian sidewalk of Victory Bridge offers a thrilling sensation of suspended flight above the geological heart of Yerevan. To the south, Mount Ararat commands the horizon in dazzling clarity, while northward the green slopes of the canyon plunge toward the riverbed. The dark volcanic basalt stonework and monumental arches give Victory Bridge an enduring, fortress-like majesty that anchors the western approach to the city center, offering unforgettable vistas over the river canyon in all seasons.
Cross to the western bridgehead and walk south toward the monumental pink tufa palace of the ArArAt Brandy Company.
