Begin your journey into hidden Yerevan at the Martiros Saryan House-Museum, standing along the leafy street named in the master's honor. Renowned as the patriarch of modern Armenian painting, Martiros Saryan revolutionized twentieth-century art by capturing the blinding sunlight, scorched mountain valleys, and vibrant folk spirit of his ancestral homeland in bold, saturated pigments. This two-story memorial studio was designed for the painter in 1932 by his close friend Alexander Tamanyan, the visionary urban architect of modern Yerevan.
The state-of-the-art museum complex was officially inaugurated in November 1967 while the eighty-seven-year-old artist was still actively creating, making it the very first living artist museum in the Soviet Union. Preserved within its climate-controlled galleries are more than three hundred original paintings, sketches, and theatrical stage designs spanning seven creative decades. Ascend to the sun-drenched second-floor workshop where Saryan worked under northern skylights, surrounded by his personal collection of folk carpets, ceramic jugs, and dried mountain wildflowers.
On the wooden easel rests his final unfinished canvas, capturing the golden contours of Mount Ararat with spontaneous, sweeping brushstrokes applied shortly before his passing in May 1972 at the age of ninety-two. Saryan also formulated the official state coat of arms of Soviet Armenia, incorporating the twin peaks of Ararat, sheaves of golden wheat, and heavy clusters of native wine grapes.
Stepping into the studio feels like entering a kaleidoscope of pure Caucasian light, where turquoise skies, fiery orange apricots, and ultramarine basalt shadows radiate from every framed canvas. The tranquil garden courtyard filled with blooming apricot trees provides a peaceful space to reflect on the master's joyful colorist philosophy before exploring the lively urban streets outside. Every corner of the light-filled studio reflects Saryan's boundless devotion to his homeland, providing an intimate artistic prelude before venturing into the lively urban quarters below.
Step out of the museum gates and stroll south along Saryan Street into the bustling heart of Yerevan's wine district.
