You have arrived at the scenic observation belvedere along Admiral Isakov Avenue, perched directly above the western precipice of the Hrazdan gorge. This wide stone terrace honors Admiral of the Fleet Hovhannes Isakov (1894–1967), a native son of the South Caucasus who served as Chief of the Main Naval Staff and Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Soviet Navy during the Second World War. A brilliant military strategist and prolific naval historian, Isakov was named a Hero of the Soviet Union.

From this eighty-meter-high vantage point, the full wild drama of the Hrazdan canyon is revealed in breathtaking detail. Directly below, the river snakes between sheer basalt cliffs that drop vertically into the chasm. Across the canyon rise the volcanic slopes of Kentron, while to the north lies the immense concrete bowl of Hrazdan Stadium, nestled dramatically into the natural amphitheater of the gorge. In the distance, the twin snow-covered peaks of Mount Ararat dominate the southern horizon.

The Hrazdan gorge is not merely a scenic landmark; it is the geological lifeline of Armenia. The river flows out of Lake Sevan at an elevation of nineteen hundred meters, plunging over a thousand vertical meters down to the Araks River. Over thousands of years, ancient basalt lava flows filled the river valley, which the relentless water steadily carved into the dramatic vertical canyon you see before you today.

Leaning on the stone parapet, you can hear the distant, rushing roar of the river echoing up through the rocky canyon walls. The cool breeze rising from the gorge carries the refreshing scent of pine needles and damp volcanic stone, creating a memorable contemplative moment. Looking north along the canyon, you can trace the steep winding trails where locals walk to escape the city heat, surrounded by wild mountain sage, blooming hawthorn bushes, and ancient volcanic crags.

Follow the paved trail winding down the western slope toward the spectacular basalt columns along the canyon floor.
