You have reached the water's edge along the rushing Hrazdan River, where the mountain stream churns over polished basalt boulders in foaming white rapids. Draining Lake Sevan over a total course of one hundred and forty-one kilometers, the Hrazdan drops over one thousand vertical meters before merging into the Araks River on the Turkish border. Down here in the canyon depths, the air temperature is noticeably five to eight degrees cooler than on the sun-baked city streets above.
Between 1930 and 1962, the river was harnessed for the pioneering Sevan-Hrazdan Cascade, an ambitious engineering network of six hydroelectric power stations that electrified Soviet Armenia and powered its post-war industrial development. In addition to clean electricity, the river waters were channeled into extensive irrigation canals that transformed the arid, dusty Ararat plain into orchards of apricots, peaches, and sweet table grapes.
The river corridor sustains an extraordinary ribbon of riparian woodland in the midst of an arid landscape. Shaded by dense stands of weeping willow, black alder, and Caucasian poplar, the clear waters are home to native South Caucasian trout, freshwater crabs, and playful river otters. Colorful European kingfishers dart like turquoise arrows above the rapids, diving for minnows among the sun-dappled eddies.
Walking beside the tumbling river with the sound of roaring water filling your ears, it is difficult to believe that you are strolling through the center of a bustling metropolis of over one million people. The rushing stream provides a deeply rejuvenating sensory contrast to the stone city. Shaded riverbanks lined with wild mint and alder groves offer a cooling respite from the summer warmth, where the soothing sound of rushing white water accompanies walkers along the scenic canyon trail. The rushing river continues its timeless journey, bringing clean alpine snowmelt down from high mountain ranges to nourish the city.
Follow the shaded path upstream toward the stone portal of the historic 1937 railway tunnel.
