You stand at the base of the monumental Cascade before the bronze-like basalt statue honoring academician Alexander Tamanyan, the visionary who shaped the identity of modern Yerevan. Sculpted by Artashes Hovsepyan and designed with architect Sargis Petrosyan, this monument was unveiled in 1974. The master builder is depicted carved from solid dark-grey basalt, leaning over a massive drafting table where the iconic 1924 master plan of Yerevan is engraved directly into the stone.

Observe the symbolic composition: the left support of the drafting table is built from rough, unworked boulders of river stone, symbolizing the ancient mud-brick provincial town that Tamanyan encountered when he arrived in 1923. The right support consists of an impeccably dressed, polished block of granite, representing the radiant modern capital of pink tufa born of his creative vision. Tamanyan rests his hands upon these twin stones of time, serving as the living bridge between Armenia's ancient past and its bright future.

Tamanyan was the first to propose linking the lower civic core with the northern residential heights of Kanaker through a monumental stepped cascade of gardens, waterfalls, and belvederes. Arriving in war-torn Yerevan after the Russian Revolution, he rejected haphazard expansion in favor of a radial-circular garden city oriented toward biblical Mount Ararat. He calculated street orientations so that residents would enjoy clear visual axes toward the sacred mountain.

Tamanyan's focused gaze captures the philosophical depth of a creator who transformed an arid plain into an architectural masterpiece. Flanking the monument are landscaped flowerbeds marking the entrance to the world-renowned Cafesjian Sculpture Garden. Tamanyan's monumental basalt figure seems perpetually engaged in conversation with the city he loved, while children play around the reflecting pool and art lovers gather to admire the outdoor sculptures spreading gracefully into the central plaza. His focused presence anchors the transition from the bustling downtown grid to the monumental ascending terraces.
