Marvel at the staggering seventy-meter sculpted figure of a giant gentleman lying recumbent upon the sandy riverbed, captured and immobilized by dozens of heavy mooring cables and ladders. Opened in December 1990, this world-famous piece of interactive civic art was created through a brilliant collaboration between architect Rafael Rivera, master Fallas sculptor Manolo Martín, and comic artist Sento Llobell. Taking direct inspiration from Jonathan Swift's timeless 1726 satirical literary classic Gulliver's Travels, it depicts the shipwrecked surgeon Lemuel Gulliver pinned down helplessly upon the sandy shores of Lilliput.
Visitors of all ages transform into playful Lilliputians, scrambling enthusiastically up the giant's wide cuffs, scaling colossal braided ropes, and gliding down twisting, thrilling slides woven into the locks of his flowing hair, sleeves, and jacket lapels. The entire seventy-meter interactive sculpture is engineered without sharp edges, utilizing smooth, ultra-durable fiberglass-reinforced resin coated with resilient non-slip enamel so that adventurous explorers of all generations can climb, slide, and explore every contour safely in total comfort.
Beneath the giant's torso lies a hollow interior that houses administrative offices, security monitoring facilities, first-aid suites, and an active municipal children's cultural activity center. Following a comprehensive eighteen-month restoration completed in late 2022, Gulliver's hand-painted polychrome finish was completely refreshed, restoring his iconic blue jacket, yellow waistcoat, and dark leather boots to brilliant vibrancy.
Gaze up into the giant's sculpted face: his wide-eyed, comical expression captures his bewildered amusement as hundreds of adventurous climbers clamber across his chest, tugging at his ruffled collar and sliding fearlessly down his ears and nose in a joyful spectacle of imaginative urban play.
Make your way up the wide landscaped garden ramp toward the southern roadway to encounter the imposing, mythical dark bronze winged gargoyles guarding the approaches to the Kingdom Bridge.
