Emerge onto the breathtaking crest of the Sololaki Ridge, a narrow rocky spine that divides the dense urban bowl of Tbilisi from the tranquil mountain valley of the National Botanical Garden. Walking along this high promenade feels like navigating the deck of an enormous ship floating above the South Caucasus. To your left, the vast metropolis spreads across the Mtkvari River basin all the way to the distant hills; to your right, sheer forested cliffs plunge into the lush emerald paradise of the Tsavkisistskali river gorge.

Look down into the canyon of the Botanical Garden, where over forty-five hundred species of Caucasian, Mediterranean, and East Asian plants thrive across one hundred and twenty hectares of terraced grounds. The garden originated as the royal fortress gardens of the Georgian Bagrationi monarchy, documented as far back as 1671 by French traveler Jean Chardin. From this windy ridge, you can spot ancient arched stone bridges spanning the mountain stream and shaded bamboo groves flourishing in the valley floor.

The name Sololaki itself derives from the Arabic word sulaq, meaning an irrigation canal or aqueduct. During the medieval Arab emirate of Tiflis in the eighth and ninth centuries, skilled engineers constructed an elaborate stone aqueduct across this mountain ridge to channel fresh drinking water from mountain springs down into the citadel and palace gardens. Though the original aqueduct has long since disappeared into the rocky soil, its ancient engineering legacy lives on in the neighborhood's enduring name.

The panoramic view from this high ridgeline is nothing short of mesmerizing. The contrasting landscape—vibrant historical city on one side, wild rugged mountain canyon on the other—showcases the extraordinary geographical setting that has made Tbilisi an impregnable fortress and beloved cultural oasis for over fifteen centuries. The crisp mountain air revitalizes your spirit as you continue along the crest toward the capital's supreme monument.

Follow the ridge path west toward the dramatic mountain viewpoint of the Kojori Pass Overlook.
