Looking northwest past the breakers, you can see the jagged offshore silhouettes of Seal Rocks, where colonies of California sea lions, harbor seals, and roosting brown pelicans have congregated on the wave-blasted rocks for centuries, delighting onlookers since the Gold Rush era.

Despite its serene appearance, Ocean Beach is renowned among oceanographers and surfers for its treacherous, powerful rip currents and frigid waters. Heavy ocean swells originating in storm systems thousands of miles away across the North Pacific crash onto these sandbars with staggering hydraulic energy. Maritime records document dozens of historic nineteenth-century clipper ships and coal schooners that lost steerage in blinding coastal fog and ran aground along this unforgiving lee shore.

In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the dunes just behind you were home to Playland-at-the-Beach, a legendary seaside amusement park famous for the Big Dipper roller coaster, the Funhouse with Laughing Sal, and delicious hot buttered popcorn. Today, the dunes have been restored with native coastal scrub.
