Stand before the monumental French neoclassical limestone facade of the Spreckels Mansion, dominating the southern crest of Lafayette Park at Washington and Octavia Streets. Commissioned in 1912 by sugar baron Adolph B. Spreckels and his charismatic wife Alma de Bretteville Spreckels, this palatial fifty-five-room chateau was designed by prominent society architect George A. Applegarth. Clad in brilliant white Utah limestone with classical Corinthian pilasters and balustraded roof terraces, the mansion was envisioned by Alma as a Parisian palace transplanted to the highest hills of California.

Alma Spreckels was a legendary cultural force in San Francisco. A passionate patron of French art who befriended sculptor Auguste Rodin and dancer Loie Fuller, she used her vast sugar fortune to acquire hundreds of world-class European bronzes and paintings. During the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition, she fell in love with the French Pavilion and subsequently funded the construction of the California Palace of the Legion of Honor in Lincoln Park, gifting her entire private art collection to the city.

Look across Washington Street into Lafayette Park, an eleven-acre hilltop sanctuary laid out in the 1860s. At the park's summit stands the stone foundation of the former home of astronomer George Davidson, who operated California's first astronomical observatory here in the 1870s, tracking planetary transits through pristine Pacific night skies. Generations of travelers, artists, and neighborhood residents have gathered at this very vantage point, inspired by the unforgettable panorama where dramatic coastal nature meets monumental human ingenuity. Since the 1980s, the Spreckels Mansion has been the private residence of best-selling novelist Danielle Steel, secluded behind towering clipped European hornbeam hedges.
