Step inside the historic portal of the Presidio Officers' Club at 50 Moraga Avenue, the cultural anchor and oldest standing building complex in the Presidio. Originally founded on September 17, 1776 by Spanish Lieutenant José Joaquín Moraga and Franciscan Father Francisco Palóu, the El Presidio garrison established Spain's northernmost military fortress in the Americas. Beneath the Spanish Colonial Revival plaster and heavy timber ceilings of the present building lie surviving whitewashed adobe walls erected by indigenous Ohlone laborers in the 1790s.
Walk into the Mesa Room and look closely at the glass viewing windows set into the interior walls. These cutaways reveal original sun-dried mud adobe bricks, horsehair binder, and stone footings that have survived Spanish rule, Mexican governance, the California Republic, and two centuries of United States military control. Over generations, this hall transitioned from a Spanish comandante's quarters to a rowdy Mexican officers' mess, and eventually to an elegant American military officers' club where generals like John J. Pershing danced at formal balls.
In 2014, the Presidio Trust completed an award-winning historic rehabilitation of the facility, transforming it into a vibrant museum, cultural center, and community gathering hall. Archaeological excavations immediately outside the building continue each summer, uncovering colonial spurs, military buttons, ceramic shards, and cooking pits left by early frontier families. Generations of travelers, artists, and neighborhood residents have gathered at this very vantage point, inspired by the unforgettable panorama where dramatic coastal nature meets monumental human ingenuity. Notice the massive hand-hewn redwood lintels overhead; their dark grain was harvested from coastal old-growth forests centuries ago.
