Pause before the neo-Gothic facade of Livraria Lello at one forty-four Rua das Carmelitas, flanked by painted allegorical figures of Art and Science. Step inside and let your eyes be drawn to the iconic crimson-lacquered curving staircase that splits, twists, and reunites like a living wooden organism in the center of the bookshop.
Look up at the ornate carved wooden ceilings: they are actually plaster meticulously painted to look like carved timber, a clever innovation by engineer Xavier Esteves when the shop was inaugurated in nineteen zero six by brothers José and António Lello. Overhead, a large stained-glass skylight bears the bookstore's Latin motto: Decus in Labore, meaning Honor in Work.
In the early nineteen nineties, author J. K. Rowling lived in Porto teaching English, frequently visiting this bookshop. The crimson twisting stairs and floor-to-ceiling shelves strongly inspired the visual design of Flourish and Blotts and the Hogwarts library in her novels.
Walk west across the square to the twin churches of Carmo and Carmelitas.
