Step onto the lower deck walkway of the Dom Luís the First Bridge and feel the vibration of the river breeze through the massive riveted iron beams. Spanning one hundred and seventy-two meters across the gorge, this double-deck iron bridge was the longest iron arch span in the world when it was inaugurated in eighteen eighty-six.

The bridge was designed by German engineer Théophile Seyrig, a disciple and former business partner of Gustave Eiffel. Seyrig won the international design competition outright against Eiffel's own competing firm, demonstrating that his graceful parabolic arch would provide superior stability for both lower roadway traffic and upper railway trains.

Look across to the south bank at Vila Nova de Gaia: nestled along the hillside are the centuries-old port wine lodges where millions of gallons of sweet, rich port age in French oak casks. In the evening, the lights of Porto reflect across the river like a sea of amber.

Take in the sweeping panoramic view across the Douro gorge. You have crossed through nine centuries of granite tenacity, wine, and boundless Atlantic discovery.
