Walk onto the wide timber planks of the Pont des Arts and rest your arms on the glass balustrade looking upstream toward the Île de la Cité. In the golden afternoon light, you are standing on the most romantic pedestrian footbridge in Paris. Opened in eighteen zero four under Napoleon Bonaparte, it was the first iron bridge in all of France, designed as a floating aerial terrace garden lined with orange trees.

Look south across the river at the magnificent gilded dome of the Institut de France, home of the Académie Française founded by Cardinal Richelieu in sixteen thirty-five. The forty immortals of the academy have met beneath that dome for four centuries to guard the purity of the French language.

For years, couples from around the world attached millions of metal padlocks to the bridge's wire mesh as a symbol of eternal love. In twenty fourteen, the crushing weight of forty-five tons of locks caused an entire section of parapet to collapse into the river! City authorities removed the locks and replaced the mesh with smooth glass panels to preserve the historic bridge from sinking.

Painters set up easels here daily to capture the changing light on the Seine. Walk west toward the leafy tip of Square du Vert-Galant.
