Arrive before the romantic, shimmering colonnade of the City Park Peristyle, situated along the tranquil southern shore of Bayou Metairie. Designed and completed in 1907 by the distinguished New Orleans architectural firm of Paul Andry and Eugene Bendernagel, this open-air neoclassical pavilion was built during the "City Beautiful" urban design movement to provide park visitors with an elegant architectural pavilion for musical concerts, ballroom dancing, and civic gatherings.

Look at the reflection in the lagoon: with its twenty-four fluted Ionic columns, graceful entablature, and gleaming white plaster finish, the Peristyle resembles an ancient Greek temple floating magically upon the calm subtropical waters.

In the early decades of the twentieth century, the Peristyle was the glamorous entertainment hub of City Park: brass dance bands and society orchestras played waltzes, ragtime, and early jazz from the raised wooden bandstand, while couples danced across the polished terrazzo floor beneath lanterns strung between the columns. Families rented wooden rowboats and canoes from the adjacent boat landing to glide along the bayou, serenaded by the music echoing over the water. Guarding the four corner stairways are classical stone lions sculpted with dignified expressions. Sunlight dances across the lagoon ripples, casting shimmering patterns onto the classical coffered ceiling of the pavilion and creating an ethereal atmosphere beloved by painters and photographers. Today, the Peristyle remains one of the most photographed and beloved architectural treasures in New Orleans, hosting weekend weddings, acoustic jazz performances, and yoga classes surrounded by ancient live oaks, weeping willows, and water lilies.

Standing between the Ionic columns looking across the lily pads of Bayou Metairie, the classical symmetry and natural beauty blend in timeless serenity. It stands as an enduring monument to the democratic ideal of beauty for all citizens.
