Step onto one of the most extraordinary natural pathways in all of Japan: Kinomichi, or the Path of Tree Roots. Here, the dirt footpath gives way to an astonishing, undulating web of thick, polished cedar roots that sprawl across the ground like knotted serpents. Towering cryptomeria trees rise straight toward the sky, but their root systems, unable to penetrate the ultra-hard bedrock of chert and limestone just beneath the surface, have grown horizontally above ground for centuries. The resulting wooden tapestry spreads across the entire forest floor like an abstract living sculpture.
Tread carefully across the exposed timber roots, stepping onto flat mossy sections to avoid slipping. The roots have been polished smooth by the straw waraji sandals of medieval monks, samurai warriors, and modern hiking boots, taking on a rich mahogany luster. Sunlight filters through the dense coniferous canopy in dramatic shafts of golden mist, creating an otherworldly, enchanted atmosphere.
This surreal root-covered ridge holds deep significance in Japanese martial legend. In the late twelfth century, the young orphan warrior Ushiwakamaru—who would later achieve legendary fame as the military genius Minamoto no Yoshitsune—was sent to Mount Kurama to become a Buddhist monk. Instead, the defiant youth slipped away each night along these very roots, leaping from root to root to develop the supernatural agility, balance, and footwork that later made him invincible in battle.
Listen to the wind soughing through the high canopy like ocean waves: the ancient trees seem to breathe in unison through their exposed, interconnected root network. Step lightly from root to root, feeling the ancient organic strength that has held this mountain ridge together through centuries of typhoons.
Continue along the undulating ridge path among the ancient cryptomeria trees until you reach the open historical clearing of Sojobatake meadow.
