Step into the storybook courtyard of Well Court, surrounded by glowing red sandstone walls, conical fairy-tale turrets, and high timber gables. Standing proudly beside the rushing river, this architectural gem looks like a medieval Scottish castle, yet it was erected in the eighteen eighties as enlightened model housing for local milling workers by John Ritchie Findlay, the philanthropic owner of The Scotsman newspaper.

Findlay believed that clean light, fresh air, and beautiful architecture could elevate the human spirit. He hired architect Sydney Mitchell to replace squalid slums with comfortable apartments, providing an ornate communal hall with a clock tower and a library where resident workers could attend evening lectures, read classic literature, and hold Sunday church services.

Look closely at the carved stone plaque above the arched entryway: it displays the motto 'Love god above all and your neighbor as yourself', reminding residents of the communal harmony Findlay hoped to foster across the entire valley.

Walk across the old stone bridge over the weir, listening to the thunder of the cascading river as you enter Bell's Brae.
