Climb up to atmospheric Prijeko Street, running parallel to Stradun along the northern hillside of the Old Town. The name Prijeko derives from the Slavic term meaning across or on the other side. Unlike the grand ceremonial boulevard below, Prijeko charms with its intimate residential ambiance, climbing stone stairways, wrought-iron lanterns, and climbing green vines framing historic gothic lintels that have weathered centuries of Dalmatian sunshine and winter sea winds.
Prijeko was laid out at the end of the thirteenth century in accordance with the pioneering Dubrovnik Urban Statute of 1272. The senate imposed strict building regulations: the connecting stairways were fixed at precisely two meters wide, and all residences had to be constructed from non-combustible white stone to prevent the spread of disastrous fires across the dense urban fabric. This strict geometrical plan established one of Europe's earliest regulated grid systems.
Historically, this hillside quarter was home to skilled craftsmen, master stonecutters, goldsmiths, and maritime captains. On the ground floors, family-run konobas catered to sailors returning from the Levant with stories of eastern voyages. Many facades still feature fourteenth-century gothic corbels, decorative stone brackets, and relief carvings of family coats of arms that testify to the modest prosperity of Ragusan burghers. Along the upper stories of these narrow residential townhouses, wrought-iron balconies and stone window brackets still hold flower pots bursting with red geraniums, preserving the domestic warmth of a close-knit medieval neighborhood.
Today Prijeko is celebrated as the premier culinary lane of the Old Town, where candlelit outdoor tables line the polished stone flagstones. The evening air fills with the mouthwatering aromas of grilled Adriatic sea bass, garlic, rosemary, and cold-pressed Dalmatian olive oil. Warm amber lantern light reflects off ancient masonry, creating a romantic dining spectacle under the star-strewn Mediterranean sky that enchants every visitor.
Walk eastward along Prijeko to the intersection with Jewish Street and the historic Synagogue.
