Stand before the breathtaking silhouette of the Museum of the Future, universally hailed as one of the most beautiful and complex buildings ever built on earth. Inaugurated on February 22, 2022, this architectural marvel was designed by Shaun Killa of Killa Design as a seamless, column-free elliptical torus. The building sits atop a landscaped green hill, its gleaming stainless-steel skin wrapped in flowing Arabic calligraphy. The calligraphy quotes the visionary poetry of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum on the future, rendered in the elegant Thuluth script by Emirati artist Mattar bin Lahej.
Look closely at the calligraphy: the flowing Arabic letters are not painted on; they are the building's windows, cut directly into the stainless-steel facade. The exterior is composed of one thousand and twenty-four unique panels made of fire-rated composite materials wrapped in marine-grade stainless steel. Each panel was fabricated using advanced aerospace algorithmic design and robotic arm milling, with no two panels sharing the same shape. At night, fourteen thousand meters of programmable LED light strips illuminate the poetic script with brilliant white light against the dark sky.
The building's symbolic anatomy represents human existence: the green hill represents the solid earth of our heritage, the gleaming torus represents human intellect and innovation, and the central void represents the unknown future that humanity has yet to write. Inside, immersive multi-sensory exhibitions transport visitors fifty years into the future, exploring space exploration, climate change mitigation, and biotechnology. National Geographic named it one of the fourteen most beautiful museums in the world before it even opened its doors to the public.
One of the three quotes carved into the facade reads: 'The future belongs to those who can imagine it, design it, and execute it; it is not something you await, but rather create.'
Follow the landscaped pedestrian promenade northeast toward the historic landmark of Dubai World Trade Centre.
