Step through the round stone archways of the Fisherman's Bastion and lean against the white limestone parapet. The view below takes your breath away: the entire panoramic expanse of the Danube River, Margaret Island, and the sprawling Gothic domes and spires of Pest open before you like an open history book.

Designed by architect Frigyes Schulek and completed in nineteen zero two as part of Hungary's millennium celebrations, this fairy-tale structure never served a defensive military purpose. Its seven pointed conical stone towers symbolize the seven nomadic Magyar chieftains who led their tribes into Hungary in eight ninety-six.

The bastion takes its name from the medieval guild of Danube fishermen who lived directly below in the Watertown district and who held the sacred duty of defending this specific stretch of the castle ramparts during times of war and siege.
