Walk along Niederkirchnerstraße and stop before this battered, weather-beaten concrete barrier. You are standing before the longest surviving continuous stretch of the outer Berlin Wall in central Berlin: two hundred meters of raw history, pitted and chipped by hundreds of souvenir hunters known as Mauerspechte or wall woodpeckers in the winter of nineteen eighty-nine.
Look down into the excavated trench directly behind the wall. Those exposed red brick foundations were the subterranean interrogation cells of the Gestapo, SS, and Reich Security Main Office. Between nineteen thirty-three and nineteen forty-five, this exact site was the administrative engine of Nazi terror, where political prisoners, resistance fighters, and Jews were interrogated, tortured, and dispatched to concentration camps across Europe.
During the Cold War, the border ran directly along this street. Because Niederkirchnerstraße was named Prinz-Albrecht-Straße in Nazi times, the East German border guards set their concrete wall right on the southern curb, leaving the sidewalk in West Berlin and the roadway in the East.
Today, the open-air Topography of Terror documentation center ensures these parallel horrors are never forgotten. Follow the pavement east toward the world's most famous checkpoint.
