Stand before the unmistakable crown of Zemun: the Millennium Tower — Milenijumska Kula, popularly known across Serbia as the Tower of Sibinjanin Janko. Rising thirty-six meters above the summit of Gardoš Hill, this dramatic monument was inaugurated on August 20, 1896, as part of Hungary's grand imperial Millennium celebrations commemorating one thousand years since the Magyar settlement of the Carpathian Basin in 896.
The Hungarian government erected four monument towers at the extreme cardinal borders of the empire, and the Gardoš tower marked the southernmost frontier of the lands of Saint Stephen. Designed by Hungarian architects in an eclectic Romanesque and Gothic revival style, the cylindrical brick-and-limestone tower is flanked by four decorative corner turrets and crowned by an expansive circular observation gallery.
Although popular lore forever tied the tower to Hungarian national hero John Hunyadi (Sibinjanin Janko), the heroic general actually died of the plague within the medieval fortress on this hill in August 1456, more than four centuries before the tower was built. At the base of the tower, you can inspect the preserved stone foundations and four round corner towers of that fourteenth-century citadel.
From the open-air balcony at the top of the tower unfolds one of the most sublime panoramas in Europe. Beneath you, the mighty Danube sweeps majestically past the forested nature reserve of Great War Island toward its meeting with the Sava, while the ancient citadel of Kalemegdan rises in regal splendor across the water. Sunset washes the endless river in liquid amber, creating an unforgettable vista. The Millennium Tower rises proudly over the river landscape, offering an unforgettable vantage point over the epic historical crossroads of Southeast Europe. This historic landmark stands as an enduring testament to the rich cultural heritage and resilience of the Serbian capital.
Walk north past the fortress walls to the gates of the historic Gardoš Cemetery.
