You have reached the top of the Grand Staircase — Velike Stepenice, the historic pedestrian arterial descent linking the heights of Kosančićev Venac with the riverfront of Karađorđeva Street below. Commissioned in 1862 following Ottoman bombardments of Belgrade, this monumental urban stairway was engineered to provide safe, swift passage between the upper residential town and the expanding commercial passenger port on the Sava.
The staircase comprises more than one hundred broad granite steps divided by resting landings that hug the steep limestone cliff face. Flanking the descent are historic nineteenth-century houses with cantilevered timber balconies and ivy-covered stone retaining walls. In spring and summer, the entire stairway is enveloped in lush cascading foliage, wild grapevines, and fragrant wisteria blossoms.
During the nineteenth century, these stairs were the first pathway traversed by foreign diplomats, visiting royalty, merchants, and travelers stepping off paddle-wheel steamers of the Austrian Danube Steamship Company. Porters carried heavy trunks of Viennese books, Venetian glass, and oriental spices up these very steps to supply the affluent trading houses of the upper town.
From the intermediate terraces of the staircase, a breathtaking vista opens over the wide expanse of the Sava River, the soaring arches of Branko's Bridge, and the gleaming skyline of New Belgrade on the distant western bank. The dramatic interplay of historic stone, lush greenery, and sweeping river views has made this flight of steps a celebrated film location for international directors. The monumental granite staircase remains an irreplaceable urban landmark, connecting the historic residential ridge directly with the dynamic commercial life of the riverfront. This historic landmark stands as an enduring testament to the rich cultural heritage and resilience of the Serbian capital. Descend the stairs to Karađorđeva Street and turn right toward the riverfront dining promenade of Beton Hala.
