You have arrived at the Chapel of Saint Petka — Kapela Svete Petke, perched on the lush terraced slope below Ružica Church beside an ancient freshwater spring. Saint Petka, known also as Saint Parascheva of the Balkans, is venerated as the patron protector of Belgrade, women, and the afflicted. Dedicated over a natural spring that has flowed for over six centuries, the present octagonal stone chapel was constructed in 1937 according to the designs of architect Momir Korunović.
Step inside the intimate sanctuary to behold an awe-inspiring spectacle: every square inch of the vaulted walls, domes, and arches is covered in brilliant glass smalt mosaic. Completed between 1980 and 1983 by distinguished artist Đuro Radlović, these millions of tiny mosaic pieces glow in shades of lapis lazuli, turquoise, and beaten gold, depicting biblical miracles and Serbian saints against deep celestial backgrounds.
In 1398, the Serbian princess Milica, widow of Prince Lazar, negotiated with Ottoman Sultan Bayezid to transfer the holy relics of Saint Petka from Bulgaria to Belgrade, where they were venerated in a sanctuary on this hillside for over a century. Even today, thousands of pilgrims queue up daily with bottles to collect the cool water from the sacred spring, which is believed to bring physical healing and spiritual solace.
The gentle murmur of running spring water, the soft golden glow of hundreds of thin candles, and the dazzling reflections of the glass mosaics create an atmosphere of profound serenity. High on the cliff above, the fortress bastions stand guard, while here in the green hollow, faith and nature intertwine. It is one of the most deeply cherished spiritual sanctuaries in all of Serbia. This historic landmark stands as an enduring testament to the rich cultural heritage and resilience of the Serbian capital.
Descend the stone terraced steps toward the Danube riverbank and proceed to the historic Nebojša Tower.
