Welcome to Parliament Square... a place that looks like a postcard of British democracy, but hides secrets far darker than any guidebook will tell you.......... Look around. On each side of this square sits a different arm of the state... Legislature to the east, in the Houses of Parliament. The Executive to the north, on Whitehall. The Judiciary to the west, in the Supreme Court. And the Church to the south, with Westminster Abbey. No other square in London holds that kind of power.......... But this wasn't always an elegant green. The area now occupied by Parliament Square was formerly a crowded district of narrow streets and small houses, cleared under Acts passed between eighteen oh four and eighteen fourteen to create an open space that came to be known as... "the Desert of Westminster."

...... Now... see that towering bronze figure of Winston Churchill in the northeast corner? Did you know he Chose that exact spot himself? It is located on a spot referred to in the nineteen fifties by Churchill as "where my statue will go." And the story of the statue's creation is delightfully awkward. When the head was still only in plaster, a committee member reported that above the eyes... he thought he was looking at Mussolini. The sculptor, Ivor Roberts-Jones, had to rework the forehead to fix the unfortunate resemblance!......... And there's a popular legend about this statue. It's said that a mild electric current runs through it to ensure pigeons don't perch and snow doesn't gather on his head. But that's actually a myth. The electrical current idea was rejected, and instead, a kind of pin-cushion arrangement was installed.......... Now here is where the story gets truly chilling. Just a few hundred metres from where you're standing, from nineteen twenty-four to nineteen sixty-four, MI six's headquarters were at fifty-four Broadway... hidden behind a brass plaque that labeled it as the "Minimax Fire Extinguisher Company." And according to a well-known espionage tale, by the mid nineteen thirties, German Intelligence placed an agent disguised as a Blind match seller opposite the building to monitor all comings and goings. Whether myth or reality... no one knows for certain.......... And the nearby Saint Ermin's Hotel? In the nineteen fifties and sixties, double agent Guy Burgess often met his Russian handler in the Caxton Bar there... to hand over top-secret government files. In nineteen forty, Churchill himself asked a group of special individuals to meet at that very hotel to "set Europe ablaze"... giving birth to the Special Operations Executive.......... So look around this peaceful square one more time. Twelve statues of statesmen gaze outward. Traffic hums along what was once Britain's First roundabout. And beneath the surface of all this ceremony... layer upon layer of intrigue, deception, and raw power.
