    Look up at this dark, brooding giant of blackened stone towering sixty-five meters above you. This is the Prášná Brána... the Powder Tower. And it has been watching over this square for more than five hundred years.

    The tower was first built as a grand entrance gate to Prague's Old Town. When construction began in fourteen seventy-five, King Vladislav the Second and the Prague city council wanted something grander than what they had. The old gate that stood here before was called the Horská Gate... but people nicknamed it the "Ragged Gate" because it was falling apart. So the king himself placed the foundation stone on March the twentieth, fourteen seventy-five.

    But here's where the story turns dark. In fourteen eighty-three, a violent uprising erupted during Vladislav's reign. The Hussite radicals, fearing for their influence, launched a bloody coup... and the Old Town burgomaster and seven New Town councilors were Thrown from the windows of their own town halls. This was Prague's Second defenestration. The revolt temporarily forced King Vladislav to flee the city. And from fourteen eighty-eight on, the gate remained unfinished... the royal residence had moved back to the Castle. The tower stood incomplete, abandoned... wearing nothing but a crude temporary roof for Centuries.

    And now, the legend. This gate marks the beginning of the Royal Route... the Královská Cesta. This was the place where coronation processions of Bohemian kings would enter the town, marking the start of the Royal Path to Prague Castle. The first king to ride this coronation route was Albrecht the Second of Habsburg in fourteen thirty-eight. Four hundred years later, in eighteen thirty-six, Ferdinand the First of Austria was the last.

    But there is an old Prague superstition... a whispered warning passed among courtiers. They said that any king who turned to look Back at the city as he passed through this gate would never rule long enough to see it again. Forward only. No glancing over your shoulder at the life you had before. The crown demanded your eyes on the road ahead... toward Saint Vítus Cathedral, toward your destiny.

    And you know what makes this superstition especially chilling? The last king ever crowned here, Ferdinand the Fifth, had his grand ceremony on September the seventh, eighteen thirty-six... but he reigned only a few years before being forced to abdicate during the revolutions of eighteen forty-eight. Some say he hesitated at this very archway. Some say he looked back.

    Oh, and one more thing most visitors never notice. The original color of this tower is Beige! It darkened over the centuries, thanks to the absorbing quality of the sandstone and pollution. So this menacing, ghost-black sentinel you see before you... was once the color of honey in sunlight. Time itself has given it its haunted disguise.
